Omegafriends Background:
Hunters don’t exist in the world of Omegafriends. That alone changes things considerably.
Like in canon, we presume, Ruby Rose’s mother was killed. In canon, it’s speculated that her mother was a Huntress; for the purposes of this AU, we’ll cement that her mother was a hero – specifically, an unpowered hero who fought against villains anyway.
Ruby was raised with Yang after the death of her mother. Ruby came to adore the heroes who fought off villains and saved people, like her mother was – the people who fought to keep others safe. This came out in several ways. The first was that she was what one could call a huge fangirl: she read all of the comics, she followed all of the news stories and internet blogs about superheroics, she tried to get autographs when she could. The second was that she put her incredible and unrealistic engineering knowledge to use in creating a weapon, Crescent Rose (a combination high-output beam sniper rifle and scythe) and then trained under her uncle Qrow, a weapons expert, in the hopes that she could one day become a hero herself.
Presumably, her sister Yang also trained with Qrow and Ruby before heading off to actually become a hero, but that’d be up to any future Yang players. (But hey, Yangs out there, this for you!)
Like in canon, Ruby thinks she has a ways to go before she can become a hero even as the RP starts.
Personality:
Ruby Rose, inexperience aside, makes a good hero. She has a strong moral compass that stems from her mother, and further developed through both her adoration of heroes and through her experiences with Yang, Qrow, and her other family members. She has a strong sense of justice, of right and wrong, and the determination to follow through on it all. She also, despite her inexperience, does show a good sense for planning, for utilizing a team’s unique skills together to put together a plan for taking down a superior foe. She makes a good hero, and a good leader, although she needs to gain some real experience before she can truly shine.
Her determination is another of Ruby’s good qualities. When she sets a goal, she follows through. That’s one of the secrets to her skill in fighting: when she started idolizing heroes, when she decided she wanted to be a hero, she took to training with an unmatched resolve and sense of purpose.
However, Ruby’s inexperience is something that one needs to note. Despite all of her good intentions, Ruby is inexperienced. Not just in combat, but in everything; planning, teamwork, even normal socialization. In battle, she doesn’t take the time to analyze the situation, rushing in headfirst. She’s naïve, easily fooled, and gullible. In some cases, especially concerning socialization, Ruby’s content to remain inexperienced as well, determining that it’s not important or necessary.
It ties in with Ruby’s childish side, something that anybody who interacts with her will realize quickly. She’s innocent, often simple-minded, and, as mentioned, naïve. It doesn’t help that she often is younger than those around her, but even for her age she can seem childish in comparison. She has no qualms with goofing off or making silly jokes, and even thrives off of it. But it also comes with great enthusiasm and friendliness, something that makes Ruby more friends than enemies.
Speaking of childishness, Ruby’s love for heroes often makes her seem like a huge nerd or geek. In canon, she loves stories of hunters and huntresses, but in this AU, she’s super into comic books and stories of the real heroes populating the city. She will quickly geek out over the latest issue of a comic or a news story about the heroes foiling yet another dastardly scheme, her enthusiasm probably bothering everybody around her. She will fangirl the real heroes so much when she meets them as well, and, in fact, keeps an autograph book on her just in case she happens to run across one. Which might be awkward once she actually makes it as a hero, but hey.
Despite all of that, Ruby does want to just... fit in. She’s practically a social outcast, but she doesn’t want to be. Like most teenagers, she wants nothing more than to fit in. She doesn’t want to stand out, she doesn’t want the spotlight. (Man, Ruby, being a hero really doesn’t mesh with that.) She, as she describes herself, doesn’t want to be the bee’s knees. She wants to be a normal girl, with normal knees.
And, to top it all off, Ruby is just chock full of self-doubt. She shows a lot of confidence when it comes to fighting, yes, and that’s true. But when it comes to being a hero, or being a leader, or even being a good friend, she needs reassurance. And when her skills are called into question, she takes it very much to heart. Looking at you, Weiss.
Overall, Ruby is a good girl with a good heart. She’s a bit of a social outcast, and she wants to fit in, but mostly she just wants to do good. And that sounds like a pretty good hero in my books.
Powers: Ruby Rose, in this AU, has no powers. She is, however, a gifted engineer, focusing on mechanical engineering and weapon development. (In other words, she can build a sweet car and an awesome gun-scythe, but not, say, a robot or advanced computer system.) She designed and created her weapon, Crescent Rose, by herself. It’s also possible, depending on future castmate whims, that she will (or will have already) designed other weapons as well.
She’s also exceptionally well-trained in both long-range and melee combat, able to go at it hand-to-hand or with her weapon against superpowered enemies. Mainly, she sticks to using Crescent Rose, her transformable beam sniper rifle / scythe. Her fighting style usually involves manipulating her momentum using shots fired from it, using recoil to change direction, add momentum, or augment the speed and force of her attacks. But even without using that, she’s strong enough and skilled enough to spin the giant weapon with ease and slice through just about anything.
This is all pretty much canon. The exception to canon is that she doesn’t have her speed semblance as seen in canon; she’s surprisingly fast, yes, but not superhumanly fast. In canon, she can perform a flashstep-like maneuver, literally disappearing and reappearing through sheer speed. She might regain this as a power later on, or she might design a pair of boots or something similar to let her emulate it, but as of her introduction she’s purely unpowered and lacks this skill.

Notes: Regarding Ruby’s mother, it’s a possibility that she would have worked with the NPCs, since I’m assuming the NPCs have been around a while? Of course, it’s also possible that she didn’t. Hey, just something I’m throwing out there.
